How to Add Captions to Your Instagram Stories

Instagram automated captions

If you’ve been on Instagram or TikTok recently, you’ve noticed the rise of captions. While creators typically had to write these by hand, Instagram released a new caption feature to make their stories more accessible. Using Instagram Stories is a powerful way to grow your business, but you want to be mindful of keeping posts accessible to all.

However, like all of Instagram’s newest features, it’s not always clear how to use them or why they’re important. In this guide, we’ll share how to add captions to your Instagram Stories. More importantly, we’ll share why this is an essential way to grow your Instagram and social media nowadays.

Why Are Captions Important?

First, why are captions important? If you can just turn the sound on to hear your Instagram Stories, why bother placing captions at all, especially when they can be tedious? These easy-to-read subtitles serve many different purposes.

  • Inclusivity: Firstly, Instagram captions are inclusive. Those with hearing difficulties weren’t able to enable the image-to-text feature for Stories, so they were largely left out of this across platforms. Now, everyone can enjoy your stories, increasing your reach.
  • No sound: Did you know a lot of people play Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories without sound? It’s true–whether they’re watching in public, on the go, or they have to stay quiet, Instagram Stories without captions are harder to watch. A reported 60% of Instagram Stories are played without sound, so this is an essential way to catch their attention.
  • Accessibility: Ultimately, Instagram captions make your online videos more accessible to all. They’re easy to watch any time of day, with or without headphones.

Because you should want to create a brand based on inclusivity and access, it’s a no brainer that these Instagram captions are something to celebrate.

How Do Instagram Captions Work?

Now that you know why they’re so important, let’s talk about how these captions work. Instagram’s newest feature uses voice-to-text AI technology to transcribe your audio into written text. Though it’s not 100% perfect, it’s pretty effective.

Currently, you can use Instagram Captions on both Stories and Instagram Reels. They’re not yet available on Facebook, though Instagram is a part of Facebook. This is expected to make its way to Facebook’s Story feature soon. Similarly, TikTok released its own automated captions around the same time. Clearly, this is the way of the future, and more platforms are likely to jump on board.

How to Add Captions

If you’ve decided to try Instagram captions for yourself, how do you get started? It’s simpler than you think. However, Instagram is currently only testing the feature with a select audience. While it will be more widespread soon, it might take a few months for the full rollout. If you don’t currently have the caption feature, update your app and continue to check for changes.

Step 1: Record your Instagram Story.

To begin, record your Instagram Story as usual. You can record sound on camera or behind the camera, either way should work. Because the caption feature isn’t 100% perfect, do your best to speak clearly, and don’t talk too quickly.

Step 2: Click on the sticker button.

Once you’ve finished recording, click on the sticker button to pull up the features. Here, if you have access to Instagram captions, you’ll see an option called ‘Captions.’ Click this to load the auto transcription. Instagram will automatically add your caption to the screen as your audio progresses.

Step 3: Edit the text.

If there are any errors in the predictive text, you can make edits. Double tap on the text to bring up the editing tool. From here, you can adjust any words that weren’t transcribed accurately.

Step 4: Change the color and font.

Lastly, you can change the colors and fonts before you publish just as you would edit other text. Make sure your text is easy to read and won’t be cut off by any other elements on your Story. It’s also important to note that if you have multiple videos as part of your Story, you will need to add the captions sticker to each frame.

Try Captions on Instagram for Yourself

No matter your niche, now is the time to try captions for yourself. Accessibility has never been more important, and you could be missing out on a wider audience by failing to caption your Instagram Stories.

With this new feature, it’s so easy to add your own custom captions without having to write everything yourself manually. This saves creators time and sanity! Most importantly, it’s a sign of where video tools will go in the future. -—
